Floodwater harvesting within streambed
The riverbed is used to store the water either on the surface by blocking water flow or in the soil profile by slowing the flow and allowing it to infiltrate in the soil. This occurs naturally or by constructing small dams or dykes across the riverbed to reduce the velocity of water flow and at the same time encourage sedimentation that in turn improves fertility and allows planting of high value fruit trees and/or crops. This technology is common in riverbeds with mild slopes. (Mekdaschi & Liniger 2013)
