On July 11th, we took part in the FU MINToring programme, an initiative that offers an introductory program in physics, computer science and geosciences to encourage female high school students' interest in these subjects. This programme offers an introduction to these fields, providing students with the opportunity to observe and engage in scientific work, particularly in areas where women are traditionally underrepresented.
The internship takes places over the course of several weeks and our working group organized a three-hour workshop with the topic "Deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon". Eleven high school girls from various schools in Berlin attended the session. They received an introduction to land-use change and remote sensing, followed by a hands-on mapping exercise related to deforestation. As part of the workshop, we also visited the map collection at the Geoscience Library.
We thoroughly enjoyed the experience of bringing the fields of geography and geoinformation science closer to these young students. Thank you to everyone who attended our workshop!
