Astrobiology Conference from September 24 to 28, 2018, at Freie Universität Berlin

On September 24 to 28, a conference will be held at Freie Universität Berlin to address the possibilities for life on other planets and the geophysical conditions that influence the emergence of life. The conference of the European Astrobiology Network Association (EANA) will focus on water. It is being organized jointly by the Department of Earth Sciences at Freie Universität Berlin, EANA, the German Astrobiological Society (DAbG), and the VAAM Space Microbiology Group.

During the conference the speakers will discuss various topics ranging from the formation of the planets of the solar system and the building blocks of life to the most extreme conditions under which life can be possible at all.

“One of the most important prerequisites on a planet for the emergence and existence of life as we know it is liquid water,” says Dr. Andreas Elsäßer from the Department of Physics at Freie Universität. Conditions conducive to life are not available on all the planets. For example, “On our neighboring planets Venus and Mars, no liquid water can exist on the surface for long,” explains the Earth scientist Prof. Dr. Lena Noack from Freie Universität. Using geophysical computer models, she tries to understand how planets have developed in the solar system, how their habitability has changed, and what scientists can deduce from them for planets outside the solar system, so-called exoplanets.
