ELaN: Development of an integrated landmanagement through sustainable usage of water and solids in North East Germany

Original title:

„Entwicklung eines integrierten Landmanagements durch nachhaltige Wasser- und Stoffnutzung in Nordostdeutschland“

Funding:

This project is part of a joint research project funded by the Federal Ministry for Education and Research (BMBF) in order to  investigate development and implementation of innovative system solutions for a sustainable landscape management (NLM). This funding measure is part of the program “Research of Sustained Development” (FONA) by the BMBF.

Project duration:

01.01.2011 - 31.12.2015

Project description:

The starting point of this joint research project is the previous practice to conduct purged sewage waters into surface waters, which results in a loss of water in the landscape. In view of increasing aridity, falling ground water levels and the nutrient needs of soils it must be considered to use purged sewage waters as a part of a sustained water and landscape management in the region of Berlin-Brandenburg. It stabilizes the regional water balance in the region and contributes to the preservation of valuable wetlands, where biomass can be grown for material and energetic exploitation. The nutrients in the sewage water are winnable for fertilizer production and therefore available to agriculture. Hence the focus is on chemical analysis and ecotoxicological examination of priority and new anthropogenic substances  to assess contamination risks of water and soil.

Project goals:

The joint research project ELaN couples technological innovations in the field of water and nutrient management with organizational innovations for a sustained land management. Beside the need for clarification of political and legal prerequisites for the use of purged sewage water, one focus lies on the strengthening of the regional added value.
