Centre pivot
This self-propelled sprinkler system rotates around the pivot point and has the lowest labour requirements of the systems considered. It is constructed using a span of pipes attached to moveable towers. Center pivot systems are either electric or oil-drive and can handle slopes up to 15 percent. The amount of water applied is controlled by the speed of rotation. Centre pivots are adaptable for any crop height and are particularly suited for lighter soils. Generally, they are not recommended for heavy soils with low infiltration rates. Computerized control panels allow the operator to specify speed changes at any place in the field, reverse the pivot, turn on auxiliary pumps at a specified time and use many other features. (Scherer 2010) Furthermore, it is possible to install a corner attachment system (also called “end-gun”) that allows irrigation of corner areas missed out by conventional center pivot systems.
