Our Milestones in 2023
Mosquito Collection
In all four country locations mosquito collection via Ovitraps, Aspirators and Sentinel Traps has started.
- In Germany, we put up 149 Ovitraps in three collection rounds (June, July, August 2023) along the A5/ A61 motorway. So far we have detected Aedes albopictus mainly north of Basel on the A5. The exact evaluation is still in progress. We will compare the data sets with 2011-2017 and 2022 data. In addition, qualitative research has been conducted in spring/summer 2023 in the Heidelberg area.
- In India, fieldwork started along the Chennai-Tiruchirappalli route. Using ovitraps for eggs, BG- sentinel traps and aspirators for adults mosquito specimen were collected on buses, trains and larvae collection happened in houses. Entomological and genomic analysis is ongoing. Qualitative interviews and go-alongs have been conducted on stations and in port infrastructure.
- In Tanzania, 670 mosquitoes were collected from buses and cargo trucks, 5.200 mosquitoes were collected at Tanga seaport, and 252 mosquitoes in trains. A social science survey and interviews were conducting at the same field sites, go-alongs with station staff and passangers is in currently in planning.
- In Mexico, a total of 457 mosquitoes were collected, 334 in buses, bus stations and markets of Valladolid, Tizimín and Progreso (Yucatán) and 123 in Merida, Chetumal and Tulum.
