Are you curious about corals, and would like to learn more about how what they are and how they live?Would you like to learn about how they can be used to reconstruct the past?
Then this course is for you!
MSc – PA007: Phylogenetische Paläontologie
“Reef ecosystems: ecology and evolution of coral reefs”
Short summary of the course content:
- Description of reefs: Structure, ecology, types, distribution (from tropical to cold waters).
- Reef evolution: past reefs, controlling factors in Earth's history.
- Corals as archives of past climate and environmental change: exploration of different methods of paleoreconstructions based on corals.
- Present-day reefs: Benefits, threats (anthropogenic influence, global climate change, coral bleaching).
- Reefs of the future: reef protection/management (individual, regional, global)
Practical skills:
- Develop and present short presentations on a topic of your choice.
- Learn to apply common methods of paleorecontruction.
This is an optative course for the Palaeontology Master, and will be given in English.
Students from other masters, who might also be interested are also welcome!
