Dr Vicente Sandoval was recently consulted by Mahmut Hamsici, correspondent for BBC Turkish, about the Chilean history of disasters related to earthquakes and its pathway to resilience.

Chile has become a model country in earthquake preparedness since the devastating 2010 earthquake. Despite not being as wealthy as Japan, another success story in this area, Chile has made significant progress in mitigating the effects of earthquakes through strict building codes, public education, and early warning systems. For example, only 13 people died in the 8.3 magnitude Illapel earthquake in 2015 and no one died in the 7.6 magnitude Chiloé earthquake in 2016. Today, Chile's disaster preparedness efforts are widely admired, and the country attracts the attention of many earthquake-prone countries, including Turkey.
