MINToring outreach workshop: “A journey through the solar system” for female pupils
The MINToring program at FUB aims at promoting the interest of young female students in Physics, Computer science and Geosciences, with the goal to reduce the underrepresentation of women in STEM subjects. As part as this program, a group of 10 female students from 9th grade came for a workshop in the group of Planetology & Remote sensing on July 10th, 2024, for a morning dedicated to Planetary sciences in a positive learning atmosphere.
Two interactive presentations were given about the geology and history of Mars, including landforms and 3D anaglyphs, and about icy ocean moons, notably Europa and Enceladus, as well as their potential for Astrobiology. In smaller groups, the students played a collaborative board game aiming at designing a space mission to either the Moon, Mars or Europa, with strategic choices of spacecrafts and instrumentation, and with diverse challenges awaiting them on their target destination. They also visited Mars and other planets or moons in the solar system in Virtual Reality. The activities were led by Maryse Napoleoni, Anastasiia Ovchinnikova, Marina Carmona Ruiz and Robert Munteanu.
