AlpArray and Mountain Building in 4-Dimensions – final scientific meeting
News from Oct 09, 2023
From the 4th-6th of October 2023, some 95 participants gathered in Bad Hofgastein, Austria for the 7th and final scientific meeting of the highly successful “AlpArray” Program, including its German arm entitled “Mountain-Building in 4-Dimension, 4D-MB” (SPP-2017). Like past meetings, this one was hosted by members of the Tectonics Group at the FU-Berlin, including Peter McPhee (coordinator) and Mark Handy (speaker and a co-founder of AlpArray). The meeting days comprised stimulating talks in the morning followed by a total of 66 afternoon poster presentations and discussion sessions. Keynote talks by early career scientists from 4D-MB as well as by invited colleagues from Europe and North America rounded out the offerings. The Bad Hofgastein Congress Center provided the perfect venue for this exciting effort to bring all the data and ideas of this project together. Animated discussions spilled over into evening dinner at the nearby “UnGsund” restaurant. The meeting concluded on the 7th of October with a traverse of the Tauern Window along the Grossglockner Pass with perfect autumn weather, providing a fitting end to the meeting and, indeed, the AlpArray project. Plans are in the making for a possible follow-up meeting in 2024.
