Technical Equipment

Processing and preparation laboratory

In the preparation department, fossils are uncovered and preserved using a variety of mechanical and chemical methods.

Electron beam microprobe

Electron beam microprobe, EM, microprobe, microprobe, an analytical instrument that can be used to determine the chemical compositions of the smallest subareas (1-2 μm diameter) of solids.

Geoscience Library

Haus O - Tips for research + literature procurement, digitization order for chapters, sections, etc. from books, digitization suggestion for entire, copyright-free books, etc

Rock laboratory specializing in paleontology

In the rock laboratory, thin sections, thick sections, polished sections and cutting work can be produced for teaching and research.

Rock and mineral collection

The collections are located on the FU Geocampus in House C. The display collections are open to the public.

ICP-MS laboratory

ICP-MS (Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry) or plasma source mass spectrometry is today the most versatile method for analyzing the concentrations of trace elements in geomaterials and in chemical and technical products.

IT-Support

IT support from the Department of Geosciences is responsible for all questions and problems relating to migrated PCs on the GeoCampus.

Card collection

The map collection is one of the scientific collections of the Free University of Berlin. It includes around 165,000 maps, in addition to topographical and thematic maps, you will also find historical maps, wall maps and a large number of atlases.

Laboratory places

A laboratory is available. There, the young researchers can work on their tasks on their own.

Media Office

The paleontology media office helps with documentation and visualization using a variety of methods.

Microscopy

The microscopic examination of microfossils or sedimentological specimens is part of the basic training in paleontology.

Paleontological exercise collection

Die Fachrichtung Paläontologie verfügt über eine systematisch gegliederte Lehr- und Forschungssammlung (Raum D027 & 28) mit ca. 10.000 Fossilien die für alle Studierenden zugänglich ist.

PC Pools

The pools are available to every student in the Department of Geosciences and can be used during the opening hours listed below. It should be noted that teaching events always have priority.

Scanning electron microscope (SEM) specializing in paleontology

The scanning electron microscope provides microphotographs with a magnification of up to five thousand times. The images generated are images of the object surfaces and have a high depth of field.

Slurry lab

Slurrying is a process for obtaining microfossils. Here, fossils larger than 0.063 mm (nanofossils) and smaller than about 2.0 mm (macrofossils) are obtained as sieve residue from a sediment sample.
